BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Led by freshman Harrison Deneka with 23 points on 8-9 shooting, the Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team defeated Millsaps, 91-74, Saturday evening in Bill Battle Coliseum.
The Panthers moved to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the Majors fell to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the SAA.
The lead changed hands six times over the course of the first half, with the teams also playing to six ties, the last one a 24-24 knot at the 5:17 mark. After that, the Panthers used a 10-0 run to pull ahead 34-24, and led 40-28 at halftime.
BSC expanded its lead quickly in the second half, going up by as much as 28, 67-39, by the 11:59 mark, and keeping the Majors from coming any closer than 16 before eventually winning by 17.
Deneka shot 8-9 overall including 6-7 from beyond the arc, his first miss coming at the 9:09 mark of the second half after he was a perfect 8-8 and 6-6. Junior Alex Avery recorded 12 points, and senior Larry Thomas added 11 as well as a team-high seven rebounds.
Ryan Detillieu led Millsaps with 20 points off the bench.
The Panthers travel to Montgomery this Tuesday to face in-state rival Huntingdon at 7 p.m., and then return home next weekend to resume conference play, hosting Berry on Friday at 8 p.m. and Oglethorpe on Sunday at 3 p.m.
