Men's Basketball set to tip off season against No. 18 Emory

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team is set to open the 2015-16 season Sunday evening, taking on No. 18 Emory in Atlanta, Ga., at 8 p.m. ET.

BSC went 16-11 last season with a 7-7 mark in the Southern Athletic Association. Although the Panthers lost All-American Larry Thomas to graduation, they return senior forward Alex Avery, who led the team in rebounding (7.1rpg) and assists (2.8apg) and was second on the team in scoring (12.2ppg). Overall BSC returns nine of its top 11 scorers from last year and six of its top eight rebounders.

Emory, ranked 18th in the nation in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, is 1-0 heading into Sunday night's game after defeating Piedmont, 72-60, on Friday. The Eagles went 22-6 last year, winning the University Athletic Association title and earning the program's third straight bid to the NCAA Championship, where they advanced to the Round of 16.
