BSC Comes From Behind to Top Sewanee 71-64

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team earned its fourth Southern Athletic Association win on Friday night, turning around a halftime deficit to Sewanee to beat the Tigers 71-64.

Going down 24-8 to start the game, the Panthers battled to cut Sewanee's lead to six points at halftime, 31-25.

Sewanee started the second half much like the first, jumping back up to an 11-point advantage. However, with just over 11 minutes to go, BSC went on a 14-4 run to take its first lead, 54-53, with 5:55 to go. From that point forward, the Panthers never surrendered the lead again and would hold on to beat the Tigers by seven points.

Senior point guard Zachary Allison (Pelham, Ala./Wallace State CC) led the Panthers with 16 points.

Junior Calvin Bak (Muscle Shoals, Ala./Muscle Shoals HS) and sophomore Matt Gonda (Roswell, Ga./Roswell HS) also hit double-digits with 13 and 14 points, respectively.

Sophomores Christian Stewart (Irondale, Ala./Shades Valley HS) and Ben Spence (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) co-led the team with six rebounds each.

After starting 0-2 in conference play, BSC has won four straight SAA matchups and sits in second place in the standings. The Panthers are 10-6 overall.

It will be a battle between the current top two teams in the conference when Birmingham-Southern returns to the Hilltop on Sunday, Jan. 20 against the first-place Centre Colonels. Tipoff for the men's game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
