SANDESTIN, Fla.—In a field full of nationally-ranked opponents, the Birmingham-Southern men's golf team finished 13th at the Golfweek Fall Invitational, which wrapped up today at Raven Golf Club at Sandestin in Sandestin, Fla.
The Panthers shot a three-round score of 919, just five strokes back from defending national champion and 25th-ranked Greensboro College, and nine strokes behind No. 4 Skidmore College.
Sophomore Landon Michelson was BSC's top finisher with a three-round total of 222 (71-74-77), tying him for 15th in the field of 90 golfers. Nine of the nation's top 15-ranked programs were at the Invitational, including No. 1 Texas Tyler, who finished second, No. 2 Methodist, who finished tied for seventh, No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan, who finished fifth, and No. 7 Guilford College, who won the tournament.
Other top 25 opponents included No. 8 Christopher Newport, No. 11 Oglethorpe, No. 12 Huntingdon, No. 15 St. John Fisher, No. 17 Wittenberg, and No. 22 LaGrange.
"This is one of the toughest fields we will encounter all season," Head Coach Jason Buha said. "It has a true National Championship feel to it. We did well on the front nine but struggled heading into the back nine. I think we are definitely a team that can compete with the top 10 teams in the country, but we struggled coming into this one. We learned a lot, though, and now it's just a matter of putting all the pieces together."
The Panthers wrap up their fall schedule next week at the Royal Lakes Fall Invitational, hosted by Oglethorpe at Royal Lakes Golf Club in Flowery Branch, Ga.
