JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga.—The Birmingham-Southern men's golf team placed 15th in a strong field of 30 teams this weekend at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational, hosted by No. 4 Oglethorpe at Jekyll Island Golf Club in Jekyll Island, Ga.
The Panthers finished with a team score of 906, and improved on every round of the tournament, shooting 310, 299, and 297. No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan was the tournament champion with a score of 870; the tournament featured seven of the nation's top 10 teams.
"These guys really impressed this week," Head Coach Jason DeJiacomo said. "They bounced back from a rough first day to shoot two sub-300 scores in rounds two and three. This team is young, traveling three freshmen, one sophomore, and one senior, and they really stepped up for this tournament. We beat quite a few ranked teams out here and I am very excited to see what the future has in store for us!"
Freshmen Tanner Dixon and Patrick Newsom were the top men's finishers for the Panthers, both shooting 225 to tie for 40th overall. The overall winner of the tournament was IWU's Tony Albano with 211 (70-71-70).
The team is back on the links for the Emory Invitational, April 7-8 in Atlanta.
