BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern College Athletics Director Kyndall Waters has named Richard Schmidt the new men's and women's golf head coach. Schmidt has been an assistant golf professional at the Country Club of Birmingham and Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis during his career, conducting clinics and organizing golf tournaments.
"Richard has a wealth of experience in golf and is well engaged in the Birmingham golf community," said Waters. "I'm excited to see his innate ability to lead and his passion for the game play out in our golf programs."
A native of Houston, Texas, Schmidt's love of golf grew from time spent at the famed Champions Golf Club under the watchful eyes of 1956 Masters and PGA Championship winner Jackie Burke Jr., and 1960 PGA Championship winner Jay Hebert. His mother, a very decorated amateur golfer in the state of Texas, won the 1989 Women's Southern Amateur.
Schmidt is a member of the U.S. Golf Association and Pine Tree Country Club. He graduated from JSU in 1999 with a degree in criminal justice after competing for the four years with the Gamecocks.
