Men’s Lacrosse announces new recruits

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Birmingham-Southern College Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Andrew Bonasera announces the list of incoming men's lacrosse recruits for the class of 2013. The 13 student athletes come from 5 different states and include some of the top performers in their respective states. The 13 recruits will make an immediate impact to the team’s success for this upcoming 2010 spring season adding depth to a team who earned 6 wins in its inaugural 2009 season.


Nicco DeRosa
is a native of Peachtree City, Ga. Nicco was a four-year letter winner at Attack for McIntosh High School. He was named 2nd team All-State Attackmen in 2009.  In 2008 he was an Honorable Mention All-State Midfielder.  DeRosa helped lead team to the 2008 state championship game.  He was selected to Team Georgia and also Atlanta Elite club teams as well as the Georgia Lacrosse Classic all-star game as a junior and senior. He was selected to the all-star team at the Gaite Cup summer tournament in 2008 playing for Team Georgia. He was also selected to the Adidas southeast regional select team in 2008 playing in the Adidas national lacrosse classic tournament where he led his team in points.

Caleb Benson also hails from Peachtree City, Ga. and McIntosh High School.  Like his team mate, Caleb was a four-year letterman at Midfielder.  He was an Honorable Mention All-State Midfielder in 2009, a 3rd team All-State Midfielder in 2008 and helped lead team to the 2008 state championship game. Benson was selected to Team Georgia and also Atlanta Elite club teams as well as the Georgia Lacrosse Classic all-star game as a junior and senior.

Brennan Ott, also from Peachtree City, GA., was a four-year letterman for McIntosh High School at Midfielder/Faceoff.  Brennan was named 2nd team All-State Midfielder in 2009.  In 2008 he made Honorable Mention All-State Midfielder and helped lead team to the 2008 state championship game. Ott was selected to Team Georgia and also Atlanta Elite club teams.  He was also selected to the Georgia Lacrosse Classic all-star game as a junior and senior.  He was also selected to the Adidas southeast regional select team in 2008 playing in the Adidas national lacrosse classic tournament.

Andrew Huffman rounds out the four players from Peachtree City, Ga.  Andrew was starting goalie for two seasons at McIntosh. In 2009 he was named to the 3rd team All-State team and in 2008 lead his team to the Georgia Championship game.  Huffman was also selected to Team Georgia and Atlanta Elite club teams and the Georgia Lacrosse Classic all-star game as a junior and senior.

Matt Ivie is a native of Alpharetta, Ga.  Matt was a four-year letterman at Attack for Blessed Trinity Catholic High School.  Ivie was named First team All-State Attackmen in 2009.  He holds the school records for goals, assists, points, and ground balls in a season and a career.  In 2008 Matt was named All- League Attackmen and selected to the Team Trident club team.  Ivie was also selected to the Georgia Lacrosse Classic all-star game as a junior and senior.

Zach Hesson is a native of Marietta, Ga.  A four-year letterman at Attack for Sprayberry High School, Zach was team captain his senior year.  In 2009 Zach was named All League and selected to Team Trident club team. He was also selected to the Georgia Lacrosse Classic all-star game as a junior and senior.

Sean Goynes of Woodstock, Ga was a three-year letter winner for Etowah High School at Midfield/Faceoff. Sean was voted his team’s overall most valuable player in 2009 when he accumulated 34 points and 60 ground balls his senior season.

Tim Hollis is the first of three additions from Memphis.  The St. Benedict High School standout was named First-team All-State for Division II at Attack. Tim was named an Honorable Mention All-State DII in 2008 for the Eagles.

Tabor Dwyer comes to the Hilltop out of Christian Brothers High School in Memphis. A two-year letterman for the CBHS, he received his team’s Midfielder of the Year award. Tabor also received his team’s coaches’ award in 2008.

Matt Gambrell is the second addition from the Purple Wave, the Memphis native lettered two years at Christian Brothers High School at Attack and Midfield.  Matt was the starting Attackman in 2009 gaining 45 points during two seasons on the varsity squad.

Collin Nickles is a four-year letter winner in Defense from Woodlands High School in The Woodlands, Texas. Collin helped lead his team to the 2008 Texas Division I state semi-finals in 2008.

Payson Clark is a native of Phoenix, Ariz. Payson was a three-year letterman at Midfield for Chaparral High School.  Clark was named First team All-State Division I Midfielder in 2009 and a 2008: Honorable Mention All-State D-I Attackmen. Clark led his team to the Division I state championship in 2009, and was named an Arizona Division I all-star in ‘07, ’08, and ‘09. Payson was also selected to the Arizona Starz club team.

Scott Gilbert of Birmingham rounds out the list.  The Hoover High School standout was a two year letterman for the Bucs in Defense.  Scott helped his team to the state championship in 2008 and 2009 and was selected to the state senior all-star game as well as the Bamalax club team.
