BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The BSC men’s lacrosse team opened their 2010 home schedule with the 13 ranked Washington & Lee University Generals.
The Generals are a perennial NCAA powerhouse, and that was on full display for the 200-plus Panther fans in attendance. Washington & Lee racked up 15 goals on 39 shots. The Panthers had some good defensive stretches, holding even for long stretches of the game, but only three of the Panthers’ 20 shots found their way past the Generals’ goalie.
The Generals took a 6-1 lead into the break. The Panthers held the #13 team in the nation scoreless for the last 6:30 of the half, but the Generals' offense broke through one last time with nine seconds on the clock to give them the five-point edge into the break.
#D.J. Ward# scored two of BSC’s goals and assisted on #Cameron Hyde#’s goal in the fourth quarter for three points on the night. #Cameron Overton# had three quarters of work in goal, collecting 13 saves in the loss.
Washington & Lee won the ground war, collecting 39 ground balls to BSC’s 28. They outshot the Panthers 39-20 and won 15-of-21 faceoffs.
The Panthers will return to action on Wednesday, March 6 when they travel to Wooster, Ohio to face the College of Wooster Scots. Game time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Central (noon local).
