Men's lacrosse gets second win, 8-7 over Mount St. Joseph
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team got its second win tonight against the College of Mount St. Joseph, 8-7. The win moves the Panthers to 2-5 on the season.
The Lions (1-5) struck first early in the first quarter with goals at 12:02 and 6:00 minutes remaining. The Panthers were able to tie the score by the end of the period with two unassisted goals from #Jacob McPherson#, the first with 3:04 left in the frame and the second with just 41 seconds to even things at 2-2.
#Nicco DeRosa# scored the first goal of the second quarter unassisted to give BSC the 3-2 advantage before two more Lion goals put Mount St. Joe back on top. With the half ticking down, McPherson found #Payson Clark# who scored the tying goal with just over a minute remaining.
The third quarter played out much like the second, Nicco DeRosa opened things again with another assist from McPherson to put BSC up 5-4 before Mount St. Joe scored two more goals to retake the lead, 6-5. This time #Matt Ivie# scored with help from #Zach Hesson# to tie the game at six goals apiece.
The fourth quarter started, again, with a DeRosa goal from McPherson putting 'Southern back up one just 17 seconds into the frame. They would hold that lead until MSJ got the evener with 8:36 remaining. The tie lasted just a minute and a half, however, as the Panthers got the game winner with 7:07 left when Payson Clark found the back of the Lions' net.
'Southern takes its second win of the season despite being out-shot 32-29 by the Lions. #Cameron Overton# played the full game in goal for the Panthers, collecting 15 saves on the night, including six in the decisive fourth quarter.
The Panthers will next travel up to Granville, Ohio to face Washington & Jefferson College in a neutral site game hosted by Denison University. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 Central.
