BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The BSC men’s lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 12-5 game today with Colorado College to open SCAC play.
The Panthers (3-7, 0-1 SCAC) jumped out early, controlling the first period of play. #Nicco DeRosa# scored the opening goal at the 12:45 mark off a cross from #Payson Clark#. They had a chance late in the period as the closing seconds ticked away. The shot found the back of the net, but just a few seconds after the horn had sounded.
BSC was able to get that second goal at the 13:37 mark of the second period when DeRosa found #Matt Ivie# who put it past the Tiger goalie to put BSC up 2-0.
The Tigers (4-1, 1-0 SCAC) gained their footing quickly, however, scoring four unanswered goals in the remainder of the half. In fact, all four goals were scored in a six minute span from the 8:38 mark to 2:30.
‘Southern finally answered in the second half. #Will Tullock# connected with #Zach Hesson# to pull the Panthers back to within one, 4-3, with 13:15 remaining in the third, but that would be the last time the Panthers would be within striking distance of the lead.
Colorado College scored six goals in the third quarter to put the game away. BSC got two more in the fourth, but were never able to close the gap. Ivie scored off a #Jacob McPherson# feed with 11:51 remaining to make it 10-4, and DeRosa got his second goal of the game with 4:20 minutes remaining to make it 11-5.
The Tigers outshot the Panthers 39-26 on the day, though BSC collected two more grounders, 32-30. Face offs were even at ten apiece. ‘Southern committed 21 turnovers to the Tigers’ 19. Goalie #Cameron Overton# collected 14 saves on the day in the loss.
The Panthers next travel up to Sewanee to take on the University of the South in their second conference match of the season. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
