Men's lacrosse falls 9-8 to Whittier
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The BSC Panthers fell 9-8 tonight to the visiting Whittier Poets at Panther Stadium.
The Panthers (4-8) held there own with the Poets (7-3). Though Whittier struck first the Panthers scored three goals in the first period to take the early lead. #Jacob McPherson# scored with 9:29 on the clock to even the score at one apiece. #Nicco DeRosa# scored with just over two minutes in the frame to answer a Poet goal at 3:57 to keep the score tied at two. Then, #Payson Clark# gave 'Southern the lead with :42 seconds in the period, 3-2.
The lead went back-and-forth in the opening minutes of the second period. Whittier tied the game with 11:00 left in the half before BSC retook the lead with 6:12 left thanks to a #Tabor Dwyer# goal to put BSC back on top 4-3.
Unfortunately, the Poets scored three more goals in the frame while holding the Panthers goal-less for the remainder of the half to hold the two goal edge at the break.
Both teams posted two goals in the third. The Panthers got a goal from #Matt Ivie# and another from DeRosa, putting the score at 8-6 going into the final period.
Whittier extended their lead to three goals with 8:14 remaining before 'Southern made a move to close the gap. Ivie got his second goal of the game with 7:12 left to bring the Panthers back within two, 7-9, and McPherson got his second goal with 3:33 remaining to pull back to one, 8-9.
Though there were several good attempts at the Poet goal in the closing minutes the Panthers were unable to complete the comeback. #Cameron Overton# collected 17 saves on the night while the Poet goalie saved 16 Panther attempts. #Payson Clark# led the Panthers in assists with four while Matt Ivie added two to his two goals.
BSC, still hunting for their first home win of the season, will host SCAC-rival Hendrix College on Sunday at noon in Panther Stadium.
