BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team got its first home win of 2010 today, defeating Hendrix College 15-4 in Panther Stadium.
The Panthers (5-8, 2-1 SCAC) racked up seven goals before the Warriors (0-9, 0-2 SCAC) could answer. BSC posted two in the first, six in the second, one in the third, and six more in the fourth to maintain control of the game from beginning to end.
#D.J. Ward# led the Panthers with five goals on the day on ten shots. #Jacob McPherson# scored three on nine shots, #Matt Ivie# scored twice, and #Dylan Kruppa# and #Sean Goynes# added one goal each. #Nicco DeRosa# added three of his own on ten shots and assisted in two more to tie Ward on the day with five points.
Ward scored the game-winner in the second quarter with 11:28 remaining off a cross from DeRosa and then got another of his five just four seconds later, following the face off, this time from Matt Ivie.
The Warriors were never able to get in much of an offensive comfort zone, in large part due to the play of #Cameron Overton#. The Panther goalie scooped up nine saves in fifty minutes in net, allowing just three goals in the effort. #Andrew Huffman# went the final ten minutes of the game getting two saves and allowing one goal.
The Panthers dominated the stat sheet, shots were 50-19, grounders 42-19, and face offs 17-5. The only category led by the Warriors was the turnover count. Hendrix turned the ball over 31 times to the Panthers' 19.
The Panthers will remain at home this Friday as they host another SCAC contest, this time with the Pirates of Southwestern University. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Panther Stadium.
