Panthers close out home season with big 20-3 win over Southwestern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men’s lacrosse team wrapped up the 2010 home schedule in fine fashion tonight, defeating Southwestern University 20-3 in SCAC action.

The Panthers (6-8, 3-1 SCAC) scored ten goals in the first half and ten in the second to overwhelm the Pirates (1-10, 1-1 SCAC). #D.J. Ward# and #Payson Clark# had four goals each as well as one assist each to lead ‘Southern offensively. #Jacob McPherson# finished the night with three goals, and #Zach Hesson# and #Dylan Kruppa# chipped in two apiece to round out those with multiple goals. #Nicco DeRosa#, #Brennan Ott#, #Ryan Croft#, #Hank Elwood#, and #Tabor Dwyer# all finished the night with one goal apiece.

#Cameron Overton# had another strong outing in goal for the Panthers collecting six saves on the night, allowing one Pirate goal in 47:40 minutes. #Andrew Huffman# and #Tim Trockenbrot# each allowed one goal and no saves in the remaining 12 minutes.

Southwestern’s goalies had quite a workout, as the Panthers fired off 63 shots for the game, 44 on goal. The Pirate defenders collected 24 saves on the night. The Panthers outshot the Pirates 63-11, won the ground war 59-23, dominated the faceoff circle 22-5 and committed nine fewer turnovers, 30-39.

BSC will conclude the 2010 campaign on the road next Sunday, April 25, as they travel up to St. Louis to take on the Fontbonne University Griffins. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
