Men's Lacrosse announces incoming class, 2011 schedule

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach Andy Bonasera has announced the list of incoming players to join the class of 2014 this fall, and has also released the team’s spring 2011 season dates of competition.

The 10 student-athletes will bring five new states (Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Florida) to the team which finished second in the SCAC last season in the program’s second season.

The new men’s lacrosse players are:

Josh Todd (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy; Defenseman)
John Gunnells (Hull, Ga./Madison County HS; Defenseman)
Brad Cooper (Lawrenceville, Ga./Peachtree Ridge HS; Midfielder)
Sean Orr (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood HS; Long Stick Midfielder)
Will Peterson (Wilmington, N.C./Cape Fear Academy; Midfielder)
Ian Diament (New Orleans, La./New Orleans Jesuit; Midfielder)
Connor Carman (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier HS; Defenseman)
Mack Weaver (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore HS; Midfielder)
Ethan Ramsey (Madison, Tenn./Pope John Paul II HS; Defenseman)
Peter Raffanti (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood HS; Midfielder)

The team’s 2011 schedule includes games against two NCAA tournament teams from the 2010 season and also dates against three new SCAC men’s lacrosse teams to join the panthers in SCAC play. The SCAC postseason tournament will be comprised of the top four teams in the league, who will compete for the conference championship at the end of April.

The Panthers return four First-Team All-SCAC players from last season: junior goalie Cameron Overton (Blythwood, S.C./Blythwood HS); sophomore attackman and SCAC Co-Newcomer of the Year Matt Ivie (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity HS); junior midfielder Jacob McPherson (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch HS), who led the league in midfield scoring; and senior defenseman Ben Schaefer (Lexington, Ky./Tates Creek HS). Second-Team All-Conference players returning are: sophomore attackman Nicco DeRosa (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh HS); and junior defenseman David Litton (Roswell, Ga./Roswell HS). The league’s leader in groundballs, junior Chris Clarke (Decatur, Ga./Decatur HS) also returns at long stick midfielder for BSC.
