Men's Lacrosse wins third straight with 19-5 victory over Fontbonne

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team notched another big win this evening, defeating Fontbonne University, 19-5, in Panther Stadium.

The Panthers have now won three straight games and move to 4-4 on the season; the Griffins fall to 1-7. In its last three games, BSC has out-scored its opponents 67-15.

The teams traded goals to start the game before BSC scored six straight. Fontbonne scored one more, and the Panthers added two more before halftime to lead 9-2 at the half.

BSC scored five straight goals to open the third period before allowing another Griffin goal. BSC scored three after that before Fontbonne scored twice in a row, and the Panthers were able to add two more goals before the end of the game.

Sophomore Matt Ivie led BSC with five goals, followed by sophomores Nicco DeRosa and Brennan Ott with three each. Juniors Jacob McPherson and Ryan Croft, and sophomore Zach Hesson all scored two goals apiece, while senior Ben Schaefer and junior D.J. Ward had one each. Junior Chris Clarke led with two assists, and he, Ott, and junior David Litton led with six ground balls apiece. Ott was 10-of-15 in faceoffs for the Panthers, and Ivie had three caused turnovers.

Sophomore Andrew Huffman started in goal for BSC and played the first three quarters, making seven saves; junior Tim Trockenbrot came in for the final 15 minutes and recorded five saves.

For Fontbonne, Caleb Harley led with two goals, while Colin Benecke, Mike Ciaravino, and Cameron Braun scored one each. Benecke also had three assists, Riley O'Neil led with six ground balls, and Mike Liebreich had four caused turnovers.

Chad Meurer started in goal for the Griffins and played the first half, recording eight saves, and Tommy Carroll came in for the second half and made seven saves.

The Panthers out-shot the Griffins 63-23, and led in ground balls 41-34. Fontbonne committed five more turnovers than BSC with 27, and BSC led face-offs 17-9. BSC was also 25-of-28 on clears, while Fontbonne was 24-of-29.

BSC is at home again this Saturday, continuing SCAC play against Oglethorpe University at 2 p.m. in Panther Stadium.
