BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team won its fourth straight game
today with a 20-2 victory over Oglethorpe University, moving to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in SCAC action. It was the last home game for senior Ben Schaefer and junior Eli Burnham, who will graduate early; they marked the occasion with Schaefer scoring two goals and Burnham scoring his first-ever collegiate goal.
The Stormy Petrels fall to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
BSC out-scored OU 12-0 in the first half, and led 14-0 before the Petrels got their first goal with 59 seconds left in the third quarter. The Panthers then out-scored Oglethorpe 6-1 in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Nicco DeRosa led with four goals, followed by junior D.J. Ward with three. Schaefer, juniors Ryan Croft and Grant Sly, and sophomore Matt Ivie all scored two goals apiece. Burnham, sophomore Zach Hesson, and freshmen Peter Raffanti, Michael Sanicola, and Josh Todd all scored one goal each.
Schaefer led with seven of the Panthers' 63 ground balls. Sophomore Andrew Huffman played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded six saves.
Maseo Brown scored both of OU's goals, while Marquel Pike and Trevor Byrum led with six ground balls each. Goalkeeper John Brewer recorded 16 saves for the Petrels.
BSC out-shot OU 73-19 and had 63 ground balls to the Petrels' 36. The Panthers were also 19-of-26 in face-offs and 17-of-20 on clears.
Today's game marked the last home date of the season for BSC; their next game is a neutral-site matchup with Greensboro College in Greenville, S.C., April 2.
