BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Sophomore Matt Ivie scored six goals in helping the Birmingham-Southern men’s lacrosse team to a 11-4 victory against Berry College, Wednesday evening in Panther Stadium.
BSC moves to 1-2 with the win, while the Vikings also fall to 1-2.
The teams traded the first four goals in the first five minutes of the game and it was tied, 2-2, at the 9:51 mark of the first quarter. A goal by Ivie with 1:19 left in the quarter put the Panthers up 3-2, and the second quarter was nearly scoreless before Ivie found the back of the net with four seconds left to give BSC a 4-2 lead at the half.
Lightning during halftime delayed the start of the second half, and the Panthers came out and scored quickly on a goal by junior D.J. Ward. The teams traded goals again after that before BSC scored the final three goals of the game in the last 3:14 of play for a final score of 11-4.
Ivie led all players with his six goals and 15 shots, while Ward scored three goals and had three assists. Sophomore Nicco DeRosa scored one goal and also had three assists, and junior Jacob McPherson had a goal and an assist. Junior Ryan Croft also added two assists.
DeRosa and sophomore Brennan Ott led with five ground balls each, and sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Huffman made five saves.
For Berry, Bryan Byers led with three of its four goals, and goalkeeper Jordan Boreman made 21 saves.
The Panthers out-shot the Vikings 55-19, and turnovers were even at 28 for each team. BSC led the face-offs, 12-to-18, and doubled Berry's ground balls, 34-17. The Panthers were also 15-of-18 on clear attempts.
BSC travels to Florida for its next contest, taking on Wittenberg University in a neutral-site game at David Martin West Field at Glen Oaks Park in Clearwater, Fla., March 12 at 6:30 p.m. ET.
