BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team defeated the University of Alabama Club Team today in a preseason exhibition game, 20-5 at Panther Stadium.
The Panthers will officially kick off the 2012 season on Feb. 12 on the road against No. 8 Lynchburg College. BSC's home opener is slated for Feb. 22 against first-year program Huntingdon College.
In today's game, BSC led 4-1 after the first quarter and 12-2 at halftime. In the third quarter both teams scored two goals, and the Panthers out-scored the Crimson Tide 6-1 in the fourth quarter.
Newcomer Erik Klein led BSC with six goals, followed by sophomore Michael Sanicola with four and junior Nicco DeRosa with three. Senior Jacob McPherson and newcomer Mike VanSickle recorded two goals apiece, and senior D.J. Ward, sophomore Nick Goska, and newcomer John Sommerall scored one goal each.
Ward, McPherson, and senior Ryan Croft recorded two assists each.
Sommerall took most of BSC's face-offs, winning 13-of-16 and leading the team with 10 ground balls. Senior David Litton also recorded six ground balls, and junior goalkeeper Andrew Huffman had five. Litton also had three caused turnovers.
Huffman played the entire first half in goal, recording five saves. Newcomer Conor Perine played the second half and made three saves.
BSC out-shot Alabama 43-23, and was 4-of-4 on extra-man opportunities.
