BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Led by freshman Erik Klein with eight goals, the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team defeated Piedmont College, 25-3, Wednesday evening in Panther Stadium.
BSC moves to 4-2 with the win, while the Lions fall to 2-3.
The Panthers scored the first four goals and led 4-0 after the first quarter. Piedmont scored the first goal of the second quarter, but BSC answered with seven straight to end the half with an 11-1 lead.
BSC scored four more to open the third quarter and go up 15-1 before Piedmont put its second goal on the board. The Panthers scored five straight to end the third quarter and then four more to open the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 24-2. The Lions scored their third goal with about seven minutes left, and BSC added one more with 3:39 left in the game.
Klein led with eight goals on 12 shots (nine on-goal). Junior Brennan Ott posted four goals, and senior Jacob McPherson had three. Junior Nicco DeRosa recorded three assists. Ott also led with nine ground balls, followed by senior Chris Clarke with eight and freshman Reed Butler with seven.
Junior goalkeeper Andrew Huffman played all 60 minutes and recorded one save, facing only four shots.
BSC out-shot Piedmont 63-11 and picked up 54 ground balls, 30 more than the Lions. The Panthers also won 27 of the 31 face-offs, led by freshman John Sommerall who was 12-of-12.
The Panthers are back in action at home this Sunday, March 11, facing Massachusetts-Boston at 2:30 p.m. in Panther Stadium.
