BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Led by senior Jacob McPherson with six goals, the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team defeated Massachusetts Boston at home Sunday afternoon, 21-10.
The Panthers now stand at 5-2 on the season; it was the season opener for the Beacons.
The game was close for the entire first half, with the teams essentially trading goals and neither one leading by more than two before the Panthers took a 7-6 lead into the halftime break.
UMB cut it to 8-7 early in the third quarter which was the closest they would come the rest of the way; BSC scored three straight after that to go up 11-7 by the end of the quarter.
The Beacons scored twice to open the fourth quarter and cut it to 11-9, but the Panthers exploded for 10 straight goals over the next eight minutes to go up 21-9. UMB scored once more, with 26 seconds remaining in the game, giving the Panthers the 21-10 victory.
McPherson led with six goals, including the game-winner at the 1:50 mark of the third quarter; he also recorded two assists, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Sommerall led with eight ground balls and was 19-of-27 in face-offs for BSC. Senior Chris Clarke also had seven ground balls and a team-high four caused turnovers.
Junior goalkeeper Andrew Huffman played all 60 minutes and recorded six saves.
BSC led in ground balls, 55-38, out-shot UMB 55-20, won 22-of-33 face-offs, and was 17-of-18 on clear attempts. The Panthers were also 7-of-10 in man-up opportunities.
BSC is off for the next 11 days before opening SCAC play on the road against Southwestern University, Friday, March 23 in Georgetown, Texas, at 4 p.m.
