GEORGETOWN, Texas—Led by freshman Erik Klein with seven goals, the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team opened SCAC action on the road today, defeating Southwestern University 17-4 in Georgetown, Texas.
The Panthers move to 6-2, while the Pirates fall to 0-8.
BSC scored the first five goals of the game - three of those by Klein - and Southwestern added one before the end of the first period. The Panthers then scored all four of the second-quarter goals and led 9-1 at halftime. BSC out-scored the Pirates 2-1 in the third quarter and 6-2 in the fourth quarter.
Klein had a game-high seven goals on 13 shots, followed by sophomore Matt Ivie with four goals and senior Jacob McPherson with two. McPherson also led with four assists, and junior Nicco DeRosa had three.
Junior goalkeeper Andrew Huffman played almost the entire game and recorded 12 saves.
BSC out-shot Southwestern 40-24, picked up more ground balls (46-30) and committed fewer turnovers (21-29). The Panthers were also 22-of-26 on clear attempts and 3-of-4 on extra-man opportunities.
BSC stays in Texas for another conference game this Sunday against University of Dallas in Irving, Texas, at 11 a.m.
