BSC Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Huntingdon In Season Opener, 22-10
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern Men's Lacrosse (1-0) scored 14 second half goals to stretch a one goal lead into a 22-10 win over Huntingdon College (0-1).
BSC outscored the Hawks 6-3 in the third quarter before pitching a shutout in the fourth quarter with eight unanswered goals. Reed Butler's goal with 9:05 left in the third quarter broke a 9-9 tie and started a run of five straight goals to help BSC take a 14-10 lead heading to the final quarter.
The Panthers trailed 3-2 after the first quarter before scoring four straight goals during a six goal second quarter to take am 8-7 halftime lead. Matt Ivie, who led BSC with eight goals, scored a goal with 14:35 left in the second quarter before Brennan Ott gave BSC a 4-3 lead at the 11:54 mark. Ivie scored two straight goals to push the lead to 6-3 with 10:12 left in second quarter.
Nicco DeRosa, who followed Ivie with six goals, gave BSC a 7-5 lead with just over six minutes remaining and Ivie wrapped up the first half scoring with 2:49 remaining.
Ott and Butler finished the day with three goals while Mike Van Sickle added two goals. Ivie had a team-high two assists while Conor Breslin, DeRosa, and VanSickle each had one assist.
Andrew Huffman made 14 saves on the afternoon to pick up the win and improve to 1-0.
BSC outshot Huntingdon 65-37 and held a 55-41 advantage on ground balls.
The Hawks were led by Jakob Works' four goals and Gavin Carey and Anthony Rovetto had two goals apiece. Brandon Sewell had a goal and two assists and Tevin Franks added a goal.
Birmingham-Southern returns to action against Goucher in a neutral site contest on the campus of Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday at 3 p.m.
