BSC Men’s Lacrosse Loses OT Heartbreaker, 12-11

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern (2-2) scored five fourth quarter goals to force overtime against Ferrum College (3-2) before falling 12-11 at Panther Stadium on Tuesday.

Ferrum led 11-6 with 6:40 left in the final quarter before the Panthers scored the final five goals to tie the game. 

Matt Ivie started the run with a goal off an assist from Nicco DeRosa to trim the deficit to 11-7 with 5:17 remaining. DeRosa and Mike VanSickle followed with goals in a span of 32 seconds to BSC make it an 11-9 game at the 4:28 mark and  DeRosa cut the FC lead down to 11-10 with 3:58 to go and Ivie tied the game at the 3:21 mark.

In overtime, the game appeared to be headed to a second extra period but Will Walter found the nets for the game winning goal with four seconds left.

Ferrum held a narrow 6-5 lead at halftime scoring three goals in each quarter while BSC scored two in the first and three in the second quarter.

Evan Lalande and Ivie tallied goals in the opening quarter while DeRossa highlighted the second with two goals and Luke Herline had one.

The third quarter was low scoring with Ferrum taking an 8-6 lead into the fourth quarter. Andrew Senft and Tyler Poage tallied goals for Ferrum while DeRosa scored for BSC.

DeRosa led the Panthers with five goals and three assists for eight points and also had two ground balls. Ivie finished with five goals and an assist for four points.

BSC held a 48-39 advantage on ground balls and were 20-of-27 on face-offs. Brennan Ott led the Panthers with 17 ground balls and won 19-of-25 on face-offs while Lalande had seven ground balls and was 1-of-2 on face-offs.

Andrew Huffman made seven saves on the night for BSC while Ferrum's Damian Pulos had 12 saves.

The Panthers were 6-for-6 on extra man opportunities while Ferrum was 1-of-3.

Birmingham-Southern returns to action on Saturday against Greensboro College in a neutral site match in Cumming, Ga.
