Three fourth-quarter goals lift BSC past Hendrix, 10-8

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--After trailing 8-7 headed into the third quarter, the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team scored three unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes to defeat Hendrix, 10-8, Saturday afternoon in Panther Stadium.

BSC moves to 5-8 overall and 3-2 in the Southern Athletic Association; Hendrix falls to 5-7 overall and 3-2 as well in the SAA.

The Panthers got the game started with four straight goals - two from freshman Evan Lalande and two from junior Peter Raffanti. The scoring was back and forth after that, with the teams trading goals twice before the Warriors cut it to 6-4 by the end of the second quarter with two straight goals by Cameron Millstone.

Lalande opened the third quarter with a BSC goal to put the Panthers ahead 7-4, but Hendrix rallied after that, scoring four straight (three of those from Millstone) to take its first lead of the game, 8-7, by the end of the quarter.

Both the Panther offense and defense stepped up in the fourth quarter, with a goal from freshman Harris Oates tying things up less than a minute in, and another Lalande goal putting BSC back up for good, 9-8. Freshman Luke Herline capped off the scoring with 41 seconds left to put the Panthers up 10-8.

BSC senior goalkeeper Andrew Huffman recorded 11 total saves, including four in the fourth quarter to stave off the Hendrix attack. Warrior keeper Joe Takacs made 10 saves.

The Panthers out-shot Hendrix 40-28, led by senior Nicco DeRosa with 15 shots. Lalande led the offense with five goals, while DeRosa recorded two assists. Senior Brennan Ott led with seven ground balls, and freshman Cassidy Higdon had three caused turnovers for BSC.

Hendrix led overall in ground balls, 38-33, and was 19-20 on clear attempts while the Panthers were 20-26. Turnovers were nearly even with Hendrix recording 22 to BSC's 21, and the Warriors won 14-of-22 face-offs.

The Panthers are at home again next weekend to close out the regular season, facing Berry College on Friday at 6 p.m. and Oglethorpe on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday will also be Senior Day for BSC seniors DeRosa, Ott, Huffman, and Matt Ivie.
