BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team earned a berth in the semifinals of the Southern Athletic Association Championship next weekend with a dominating 22-6 win over the Hendrix Warriors, Saturday afternoon at Panther Stadium.

Fourth-seeded BSC (7-9) opened the match strong on both offense and defense during the first quarter. The Panthers scored the first three goals of the contest and kept fifth-seeded Hendrix (5-10) off the scoreboard until there were only two minutes left in the opening period.

After almost seven minutes of scoreless play, freshman Evan Lalande scored the first Panther goal, and the first of his game-high five goals. Lalande's five goals were matched by sophomore Mike VanSickle, who contributed to the offensive output in the first quarter with a goal at the 1:57 mark. The period ended with the Panthers enjoying a 6-2 advantage. The Panthers were able to limit Hendrix to five shots in the quarter while taking 15 of their own.

BSC continued to control the match in the second quarter and expand the four-goal advantage of the first quarter into a 12-3 lead at the half. By the end of the first half, the Panthers enjoyed a 26-9 advantage in shots and only committed seven turnovers, compared to Hendrix's 15.

Birmingham-Southern kept up the scoring in the second half and scored six unanswered goals. The offensive production was matched by the defensive effort from the Panthers, holding the Warriors to only three shots in the third quarter. Senior BSC goalkeeper Andrew Huffman tallied four saves in his three quarters of work.

Lalande led all players with five goals and five assists, and senior Brennan Ott led with 13 ground balls and 12 face-offs.

When the contest ended, BSC held a 52-20 advantage in shots and successfully converted four of six man-up opportunites, while Hendrix scored on none of their four chances.

The Panthers will face top-seeded Sewanee in the semifinals on Friday, April 26, in Sewanee, Tenn.
