BIRMINGHAM, Ala.–The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team had nine of its players voted to the 2013 All-Southern Athletic Association Team, as voted on by the league's head coaches.
Senior Matt Ivie was the lone Panther named to the All-SAA First Team, while senior goalkeeper Andrew Huffman, senior attacker Nicco DeRosa, senior midfielder Brennan Ott, sophomore defenseman Will Slinkard, and sophomore short stick defensive midfielder Billy McMahon all earned Second-Team honors. Freshman midfielder Evan Lalande, sophomore midfielder Mike VanSickle, and freshman long stick midfielder Derek Wass were named to the Honorable Mention All-SAA Team.
Ivie (Alpharetta, Ga.), whose career ended early after he suffered a knee injury toward the end of the season, was ranked 10th in the SAA in goals with 34, and first with 11 man-up goals. He also had eight assists for 42 points as well as 20 ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Huffman led the conference with 935 minutes in goal and ranked second with 179 saves and fourth with a 10.14 goals-against average.
DeRosa (Peachtree City, Ga.) ranked ninth in the SAA with 17 assists this season and also scored 26 goals for 43 points. He also collected 30 ground balls with 10 caused turnovers.
Ott (Peachtree City, Ga.) led the conference with 162 ground balls and ranked 11th in the nation in ground balls per game (9.53). He was also fourth in the SAA in faceoffs, going 149-293, and recorded 18 goals and 16 assists for 34 points.
Slinkard (Nashville, Tenn.) was 15th in the SAA with 14 caused turnovers and had 33 ground balls. He also won 11 faceoffs.
McMahon (Birmingham, Ala.) recorded 33 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers in 2013.
Lalande (Fairfax, Va.) was ninth in the conference with 17 assists, 13th in goals with 30, and 10th in points with 47. He also had 44 ground balls and two caused turnovers, as well as eight face-off wins.
VanSickle (Amherst, N.H.) recorded 22 goals and eight assists for 30 points, and also had 22 ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Wass (Bel Air, Md.) had 35 ground balls, 12 caused turnovers, one goal and one assist this season.
