DEMOREST, Ga.—Five different Panthers found the net Saturday evening as the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team defeated Piedmont on the road, 6-5, for BSC's first win of the season. The Panthers improve to 1-2, while the Lions fall to 3-2.
Piedmont scored the first goal of the game six minutes in, and the 1-0 lead stood until the 5:29 mark when junior Mike VanSickle scored off an assist from freshman McHale Schneider. The Panthers took the lead three-and-a-half minutes later on a man-up goal by sophomore Evan Lalande, assisted by freshman Matt Musser, but Piedmont responded 15 seconds later to tie things up. The tie stood for less than a minute as Musser and Schneider combined for another Panther goal with 50 seconds left in the quarter to put BSC up 3-2.
The Panthers scored the lone goal of the second quarter, with Musser recording his second goal off a Lalande assist, and BSC led 4-2 at halftime.
Piedmont opened the scoring in the third quarter with two goals in the first seven minutes to tie it up 4-4, but BSC responded again with Harris Oates scoring off another Schneider assist, and freshman Thomas Grove scoring the game-winner at the 3:43 mark.
The Lions scored the final goal of the game at the 8:58 mark of the fourth quarter, and BSC held them scoreless for the remainder of the game. Junior goalkeeper Conor Perine faced nine Piedmont shots, three on-goal, over the final nine minutes to help stave off the Lion offense and preserve the 6-5 victory.
Perine recorded 12 total saves in 60 minutes of play, while Piedmont keeper Mick Baker had 13 saves.
BSC out-shot Piedmont 40-32, but was 4-14 on face-offs. Turnovers were even at 11 for both teams.
The Panthers are at home on Tuesday, March 4, taking on La Roche College out of Pittsburgh, Pa., at 6 p.m. on Battle Field at Panther Stadium.
