BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Freshman McHale Schneider scored six goals Tuesday evening as the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team defeated La Roche College 17-11 on Battle Field at Panther Stadium. The Panthers move to 2-2 while the Redhawks fall to 0-1.
With the exception of the first two minutes of the game, when La Roche scored the first goal, BSC never trailed, tying things up less than a minute later on Schneider's first goal (assisted by freshman Thomas Grove), and then pulling ahead at the 9:21 mark on a score by freshman Matt Musser. The Panthers led 5-3 at the end of the first quarter, and used six straight goals to go up 10-3 by the 6:22 mark of the second quarter. Each team scored twice after that and BSC led 12-5 at the half.
The Redhawks led 3-2 in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 14-8, and then cut it to 14-9 at the 7:37 mark of the fourth quarter on a man-up goal by Jonathan Monahan. The teams traded goals after that, with BSC scoring three times (two from Schneider and one from Musser) to clinch the eight-goal victory.
Schneider had six goals on eight shots (seven on-goal), and Grove led with 13 face-off wins and eight ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Conor Perine recorded seven saves while facing 18 shots from La Roche.
Jean Thouin led La Roche with four goals and five ground balls, and Eugene LaBorde made nine saves in goal.
BSC travels to face Millsaps this weekend to open Southern Athletic Association play, Saturday at 1 p.m. in Jackson, Miss.
