BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Led by freshman David Arnold with four goals in his collegiate debut, the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team defeated Centenary 22-1 Saturday afternoon on Battle Field at Panther Stadium in the team's season opener.
The Panthers moved to 1-0, while the Gents dropped to 0-2 after losing to Hendrix earlier this week.
Freshman Peyton Heard opened scoring for BSC less than a minute in, kicking off an 8-0 first quarter. The Panthers added six more goals in the second to lead 14-0 at the half.
BSC scored four in the third quarter to lead 18-0, and then scored one to open the fourth quarter before the Gents found the back of the Panther net when Matt Ferrell scored with 5:38 remaining in the game. The Panthers added three more goals before the final horn.
Sophomore McHale Schneider, who led the team in scoring last year as a freshman with 24 goals, scored three today, while junior Harris Oates, junior Austin Hafdell, junior Gates Gentry, and Heard all finished the game with two goals apiece. Schneider, Arnold, junior Ryan Sobb, and freshman Roman Brown also had two assists each.
Freshman Keenan Hudsmith picked up a team-high six ground balls and was 12-18 on face-offs. Junior Derek Wass recorded five ground balls, and senior Billy McMahon had four ground balls and a team-high three caused turnovers.
Senior Conor Perine started in goal and made one save, and sophomore Hank Harris and freshman Henry Stephenson also saw significant time in the net, with Stephenson making three fourth-quarter saves. Centenary goalie Colton Toups had eight saves.
The Panthers travel to face Greensboro College next Saturday, Feb. 14, in Greensboro, N.C., before returning home to host Piedmont College on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m.
