BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team picked up a 10-7 victory at home Saturday afternoon, defeating Southwestern University on Battle Field at Panther Stadium.
The Panthers moved to 4-1, while the Pirates fell to 3-3.
After Southwestern scored the first goal of the game only 1:20 in, BSC scored three straight goals in a span of three minutes to pull ahead 3-1 by the 9:02 mark. The Pirates added one more before the end of the quarter to cut it to 3-2, and then tied things up to open the second quarter with another quick goal.
The teams traded goals after that, playing to a 4-4 tie by the 8:42 mark of the second quarter, but BSC scored twice in a row after that to pull ahead 6-4 heading into the halftime break.
Both teams took turns scoring in the third quarter, both putting two on the board to put the Panthers in an 8-6 lead after three, and BSC pulled ahead 10-6 near the end of the fourth quarter before the Pirates scored once more with 2:39 left in the game.
Sophomore Thomas Grove led BSC with three goals, and sophomore McHale Schneider recorded two goals and an assist. Junior Derek Wass led with four ground balls, and Grove was 10-15 on face-offs. Senior goalkeeper Conor Perine played all 60 minutes and recorded eight saves.
The Panthers are at home again this Tuesday, March 3, hosting Otterbein University at 7 p.m.
