BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team dropped a home game Wednesday afternoon, losing to Benedictine University, 14-9, on Battle Field at Panther Stadium.
The Panthers fell to 5-3, while the Eagles moved to 4-2.
BU jumped out to a 4-1 lead by the 6:26 mark of the first quarter, and then led 5-2 at the 13:40 mark of the second quarter. BSC fought back after that, with a goal from freshman David Arnold and two from freshman Andrew Wickersham, to tie things up at the 10:23 mark, but the Eagles scored twice more before the end of the quarter to lead 7-5 at the half.
BSC scored to open the third quarter with a goal from sophomore McHale Schneider before another BU goal two minutes later put the Eagles up 8-6. The Panthers then cut it to 7-6 at the 11:37 mark on a goal by freshman Peyton Heard. The Eagles offense exploded after that, though, scoring four straight to end the quarter with a 12-7 lead.
Benedictine scored twice to open the fourth quarter and pull ahead 14-7 for the largest lead of the game. BSC was able to score twice more, with goals by senior Connor Breslin and Schneider, before the end of the game.
Schneider, Arnold, Heard, and Wickersham finished with two goals apiece, and Schneider and Arnold also posted two assists each. Sophomore Thomas Grove was 12-17 on face-offs and picked up a game-high nine ground balls.
The Panthers are on the road for their next three games, beginning with a trip to Memphis this weekend to face Southern Athletic Association rival Rhodes, Saturday at 7 p.m.
