DANVILLE, Ky.—The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team dropped its first conference match of the season Friday evening, falling to Centre, 8-4, at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
BSC is now 6-4 this season with a 2-1 mark in the Southern Athletic Association. Centre moves to 5-4 for the year and 2-1 in conference play.
The first half of play was a tight contest that featured three lead changes and three ties. Neither side would ever enjoy an advantage of more than one goal in the opening 30 minutes of play. BSC found itself in a 1-0 hole at the 6:55 mark of the first quarter when Centre was able to capitalize on its only power play of the match. The Panthers quickly responded when a pair of unassisted goals, one from freshman David Arnold and another from fellow freshman Peyton Heard, a little over two minutes apart from one another, gave BSC a 2-1 lead with less than a minute remaining in the opening quarter. Centre evened the match at two with a mere two seconds left on the clock in the first quarter.
At the 7:00 mark of the second Arnold gave the Panthers another one goal advantage until a late Centre goal, this time with 15 seconds left in the half, pulled the teams even at three heading into the locker room.
BSC's Heard once again found the back of the net to earn the Panthers a lead, this time 4-3 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. Unfortunately for BSC, it was their final goal of the match. The Panthers were held scoreless for the last quarter and a half of play while Centre scored five unanswered goals to claim the 8-4 victory.
Senior goalkeeper Conor Perine recorded 12 saves in the match.
The Panthers continue their weekend road trip, heading to Sewanee, Tenn., to face Sewanee on Sunday, at 12 p.m.
