BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Led by sophomore McHale Schneider with three goals and four assists, the Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team picked up a conference win at home Saturday, defeating Hendrix 16-8 on Battle Field at Panther Stadium.
The Panthers moved to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the Southern Athletic Association, and the Warriors fell to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the SAA.
BSC opened the game with three straight goals and would never trail. Hendrix scored once before the end of the first quarter, but the Panthers out-scored the Warriors 4-2 in the second quarter to lead 7-3 at the half.
After a goal from BSC to open the third quarter, Hendrix made things interesting, scoring three straight to cut the lead to 8-6 with 5:17 left in the third. The Panthers responded with two goals to end the quarter, though, and then scored a goal to open the fourth quarter and go up 11-6. After another Warrior goal, BSC scored five straight to pull up 16-7 for the largest lead of the game with 54 seconds remaining. Hendrix managed to score once more before the end of the game for a 16-8 final.
Schneider's seven points were a game high, while junior Evan Lalande added three goals and one assist. Sophomore Thomas Grove and freshmen David Arnold and Justin Dennis each had two goals and one assist. Freshman Ben Sinclair led with six ground balls, followed by Lalande with five. Junior Derek Wass also had three caused turnovers. Grove was 12-19 on face-offs, and freshman Keenan Hudsmith was 8-8. Senior goalie Conor Perine played the entire game and recorded seven saves.
The Panthers are at home again this Wednesday, April 8, hosting Huntingdon at 6 p.m., and then wrap up the regular season at home on Sunday, April 12, in a 1 p.m. game against Berry. Next Sunday's game will also be Senior Day for the Panthers' four seniors (Perine, Mike VanSickle, Connor Breslin, and Billy McMahon).
