BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team fell to rival Sewanee in a 12-10 thriller at home on Thursday night.
The Panthers and Tigers battled back-and-forth for the entire game with the visitors taking the final advantage with just 2:20 to play in the third period.
The Tigers responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter, but goals by Taylor, Wallace and senior Justin Dennis (Buford, Ga./McCallie School) would draw the Panthers even with the Tigers 4-4 at halftime.
After the break, a Davis Thompson (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes HS) goal with 9:46 to go in the third would give BSC a 7-6 lead. However, Sewanee regrouped and retook the lead 9-8 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Thompson would add another goal in the fourth, but BSC was outscored 3-2 in the final period and a Jake Vaughn goal with 3:50 to play would give Sewanee a three-goal advantage and seal the win for the Tigers.
Taylor led Birmingham-Southern on offense with four goals off eight shots. Thompson, BSC's leading scorer this season, added three more to his tally, giving him 25 goals on the year.
In goal, sophomore Matt Quill (Fort Mill, S.C./Coker College) had 14 saves.
The Panthers will remain at home for their next match, a Southern Athletic Association battle with the Colonels of Centre College on Sunday, March 18. Start time for the game is set for 1 p.m.
