BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 4 seed Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team survived and advanced against fifth-seeded Centre College on Friday night, sneaking past the Colonels 9-8 at Krulak Stadium.
Centre led after each of the first two quarters, taking a 5-4 lead into the halftime break, but the Panthers would take momentum and the lead in the second half.
Sophomore midfielder Braden McCombs (Hoover, Ala./Hoover HS) scored the game-tying and go-ahead goals for BSC in the third quarter. McCombs' goals were the only two goals in the period, giving the Panthers a 6-5 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
BSC extended its lead to 9-7 with 4:04 to go and staved off the Colonels for the remainder of the game to take the win and advance to the semifinal round of the SAA tournament.
Juniors Davis Thompson (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes HS) and Peyton Taylor (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) led the Panthers with three goals each. Sophomore Taylor Carson (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) had three assists.
Goalie Matt Quill (Fort Mill, S.C./Coker College) finished the game with seven saves.
Birmingham-Southern will travel to face the No. 1 seed Rhodes College for the semifinal match on Sunday, April 22. It will be BSC's sixth-consecutive SAA Semifinal appearance.
