BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team defeated Southwestern University 13-12 in its home-opener on Friday night.
The Panthers defeated the Pirates in a close one behind four goals from senior Peyton Taylor (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) and three goals from sophomore Carter Watkins (Charlotte, N.C./Adrey Kell HS).
BSC ended the first period on top 6-4 but Southwestern topped the home side 3-2 in the second quarter to make it 8-7, BSC, at the halftime break.
The second half followed a similar pattern with BSC holding a 3-2 goal advantage in the third and Southwestern outscoring the Panthers 3-2 in the fourth.
An unassisted Davis Thompson (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes HS) goal with 3:47 remaining proved to be the game-winner for the Panthers, giving them their 13th and final goal of the night, enough to squeak out the win against the Pirates.
BSC goalkeeper Matt Quill (Fort Mill, S.C./Coker College) played his own part in the Panther victory. The senior played all 60 minutes, denying the Pirates 14 times.
With the win, BSC improves to 2-0 on the year.
Birmingham-Southern will travel to Bridgewater in Virginia for its next match on Thursday, Feb. 21.
