SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team fell to Southern Athletic Association rival Sewanee 15-14 Sunday afternoon in a tough overtime road loss.
After leading the Tigers after the first quarter and going into halftime up 9-6, the Panthers allowed an 8-4 run which saw Sewanee go up 14-13 with 19 seconds remaining in regulation. It was a game-tying goal by senior Peyton Taylor (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) with 10 seconds left that sent the game to overtime.
Sewanee's Hayden Hunt scored the game-winning goal with 34 seconds left in the first overtime period, handing BSC its first overtime loss since falling to Rhodes in the semifinals of the SAA tournament last season.
Taylor was BSC's top offensive producer in the loss, scoring a season-high seven goals. Davis Thompson (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes HS) and Taylor Carson (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) scored multiple goals, as well, with two and three, respectively.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Quill (Fort Mill, S.C./Coker College) recorded a season-high 19 saves in the game.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 5-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference. Birmingham-Southern will look to rebound in its next game, a home SAA match against Hendrix College on Saturday, April 6. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
