BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men's lacrosse team routed the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels 24-2 at home on Friday night.
The Panthers outscored Oglethorpe 12-1 in each half to win their second Southern Athletic Association game of the year.
Led by five goals from both Carter Watkins (Charlotte, N.C./Adrey Kell HS) and Peyton Taylor (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS), ten different Panthers scored in the win. Junior Taylor Carson (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook HS) scored four goals and two others had multiple goals.
Sophomore Alex Bates (Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) got the start in goal for BSC, playing 30 minutes. He left the game with one save. Senior Zachary Mathews (Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze HS) played almost 20 minutes and led BSC goalies with four saves.
For the game, BSC outshot Oglethorpe 65-18 and forced 12 turnovers.
With the win, Birmingham-Southern improves to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the SAA. The Panthers will host Berry College on Saturday in their regular-season finale. BSC's ten seniors will be honored and recognized pre-game.
