Panthers drop final match of Labor Day Classic to Washington, 2-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern (1-1) men's soccer team dropped a tough one Sunday in the final game of the 2008 BSC Labor Day Classic to the Washington University-St. Louis (1-1)Bears, 2-1.  The game put both teams at 1-1 for the tournament.

The Panthers looked good in the first half, controlling the tempo and scoring first off a Carter McLean corner to Garner Shivers for the 1-0 lead at the half.  BSC held the Bears to just four shots in the half, two on goal. 

The game was evenly matched well into the second half.  The Bears were able to tie the score at one apiece off an unassisted goal in the 51st minute from Marshall Plow.  The game continued for another 20 minutes before Washington put the game away in the 71st minute with a goal from Kellen Hayes.

The Panthers were unable to answer the second goal for WUStL and took their first loss of the season.  Hal Halbert took the loss at goal, dropping him to 1-1 on the young season.

BSC will be back in action next Friday, September 5, when they travel to the Kyle Rote, Jr. Invitational in Sewanee, Tenn.  Game times are 5pm against Johns Hopkins University and at 12pm on Sunday for game two with the University of the Ozarks.
