It will be the first time ever that the soccer teams from the Army, Air Force, and Navy compete at the same venue at the same time. The Birmingham-Southern men’s team will join the Service Academy teams in the two-day tournament to be held at the Birmingham-Southern Soccer Park.
“This historic weekend has been in the works since 2001,” said Birmingham-Southern Head Soccer Coach Preston Goldfarb, a former armored intelligence officer in the U.S. Army. “We think it is important to always find ways to recognize the men and women who serve in our military, and we are excited to be bringing the Army, Air Force, and Navy soccer teams to Birmingham so that our community can express our support for these future military leaders.”
In addition to the soccer action, other festivities are planned for the tournament. The Army Golden Knight Elite Parachute Jump Team out of Fort Knox, Ky., will deliver the American flag and game ball to the center of the field on Friday evening, and the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” Elite Parachute Jump Team out of Fort Campbell, Ky., will do the same on Sunday afternoon.
The schedule for Friday, Sept. 19, includes Air Force vs. Navy soccer at 5 p.m., the Army Gold Knight Elite Parachute Jump Team jump at 7:15 p.m., and BSC vs. Army soccer at 7:30 p.m.
The schedule for Sunday, Sept. 21, includes Army vs. Air Force soccer at 11 a.m., the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” Elite Parachute Jump Team jump at 1:15 p.m., and BSC vs. Navy soccer at 1:30 p.m.
Corporate Sponsors for the BSC Armed Forces Soccer Classic are the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion Montgomery, Alabama; Alabama Power; Jim ’N Nick’s BBQ; PUMA; and The Sheraton Downtown Hotel.
Both days of soccer and activities are open to the public and admission is free.
