Panthers come up short against Choctaws, 6-3
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The BSC men’s soccer team (1-4) dropped the second game of the 2008 BSC Invitational 6-3 to the Choctaws of Mississippi College (2-0) at BSC Soccer Park on Friday.
The game was packed with scoring on both sides of the pitch all night. The Choctaws struck first, scoring in the 11th minute off the foot of Barry Prather. The game was tied 1-1 at the half, however, thanks to Garner Shivers’ fourth goal of the season in the 41st minute.
The pace quickened in the second half as the two squads came together for seven goals in the period. A Tucker Downs’ goal in the 52nd minute was quickly answered off a goal from Tyler Evans with an assist from Andrew Stein. Nick Pihakis’ goal in the 79th was not enough to overcome the final push made by the Mississippi College offense. They scored three unanswered goals in the second to take the victory away from the Panthers.
Hal Halbert came away with the loss at goal, allowing four of MC’s six. He recorded eight saves on the night. Shachar Hovan gave up the final two goals in the final 13 minutes of play. He had 2 saves to his credit.
The Panthers will return to the pitch on Sunday as they host the final game of the 2008 BSC Invitational at 2:30. They will face the loser of tonight’s first game, Spring Hill. The NAIA Badgers lost 5-1 to Oglethorpe in today’s opening game. Oglethorpe will face MC at noon from BSC Soccer Park.
