BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern Panthers controlled every aspect of the game Friday night and claimed their first victory of 2009 with a 7-0 shutout of the visiting Blackburn College Beavers. The match was the second of the 2009 Birmingham-Southern Labor Day Classic held at BSC Soccer Park.
#Garner Shivers# scored first early in the game off a nice cross from #Tyler Evans# to give the Panthers what proved to be the winning goal. Evans got a goal of his own in the 17th Shivers wasn’t finished, though and scored again in the 29th minute to put BSC up three.
Six Panthers netted goals on the night, with a single goal each coming from freshmen #Nicholas Reitmeier#, #Jonathan Alexander#, and #Stuart Weekes# for each of their first collegiate goals. Another newcomer, #Tony Crocker# rounded out the scoring for ‘Southern with his solo goal in the 30th minute.
The Beavers were never able to get into any kind of rhythm putting no shots on the stat sheet compared to BSC’s 32. Blackburn’s keeper didn’t have a bad night all round, gaining nine saves in the game, but he just couldn’t withstand the near-unending pressure from the Panther’s front line.
The Panthers will look to make it two in a row in the conclusion of the 2009 Birmingham-Southern Labor Day Classic as they face off with the winner of game one, the Choctaws of Mississippi College. MC defeated SCAC-rival Sewanee 3-0 in the classic-opener earlier in the evening.
Game time for game three, featuring Blackburn and Sewanee is set for noon, with the BSC-Mississippi College game to follow at 2:30. This will be the Panthers’ last home match until the end of the month, when coach Goldfarb’s team will open SCAC play with Rhodes College on September 25th.
