Panthers drop season finale 3-1 to Berry
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men’s soccer team ended the 2009 season with a fizzle tonight against Berry College, falling 3-1 at BSC Soccer Park. The Panthers finish the season with a 11-6-2 record.
The game stayed scoreless throughout the first half with neither team able to break the other’s defense. The two keepers totaled just five saves between them in the period. Berry was able to break through in the 44th-minute off a miscue from the Panthers that sent them into the half down 1-0.
‘Southern recomposed themselves and got the evener at the open of the second half when #Tony Crocker# found the back of the net in the 50th. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the Vikings got two more goals before the end of the match that BSC left unanswered.
Adding insult to injury, the game-winner for Berry was an own-goal in the Panther box in the 75th-minute that gave the win to the Vikings. They scored one of their own in the 78th to put the final score at 3-1.
Tonight’s match was the final game in a Panther uniform for BSC’s two seniors. #Scott Shelton# and #Stephen Rumble# concluded their college carrers on a sour note, but were still able to lead the Panthers to eleven victories on the season and 31 victories during their tenure on the Hilltop.
They helped see Panther soccer through the transtion from Division I to Division III as members of the last Big South team in 2006. They provided steadfast leadership on and off the field for the Panthers this season as team co-captains. Their contributions will be missed by all those who follow and love BSC Soccer.
