Men’s Soccer opens season with 2-1 win against Mississippi College
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men’s soccer team kicked off the 2010 season with a 2-1 victory against Mississippi College, Wednesday evening at BSC Soccer Park. It was the season opener for both teams.
The Panthers scored their first goal in the 22nd minute when sophomore #Garner Shivers# headed the ball into the net off a corner kick by freshman #Ingvi Georgsson#.
BSC kept the 1-0 lead through the remainder of the half and most of the second half before the Choctaws scored the equalizer in the 75th minute on a goal by Julio Cesar Espinal.
The tie would not last long, however, as Panther junior #Tony Crocker# found the net less than two minutes later off an assist from Shivers to put BSC up 2-1. BSC held on to its lead for the remaining 14 minutes to begin the season at 1-0.
Senior goalkeeper #Shachar Hovan# made five saves in 90 minutes, while MC keeper Andrew Dailey made three. Crocker led the Panthers with four of their seven shots, and Michael Cooper led MC with four of its 14 shots.
The Panthers are at home again this weekend, hosting the Jim ‘n Nick’s/PUMA Labor Day Classic, featuring Sewanee, Fontbonne, and Washington University. BSC takes on Washington, Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., and faces Fontbonne, Monday, at 1:30 p.m.
