Panthers drop heartbreaker to Fontbonne, 2-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team fell to Fontbonne University, 2-1, Monday afternoon in the final game of the 2010 Jim 'n Nick's/Puma Labor Day Classic at BSC Soccer Park. The Panthers now stand at 1-1-1 on the season.

Fontbonne scored first early as Justin Williams netted a goal at the 4:14 mark. The Griffins took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break before BSC tied things up in the 60th minute on a goal by junior #Garner Shivers#, assisted by senior captain #Carter McLean#.

Fontbonne took the lead in the 86th minute when Wesley Laney scored on a header off a corner kick from Josh Schultz.

BSC had a chance to tie it up with 28 seconds left when a foul was called inside the box, but sophomore #Nicholas Reitmeier#'s penalty kick was saved by Griffin goalkeeper Zach Will.

Senior keeper #Shachar Hovan# played all 90 minutes for the Panthers and made one save. Junior #Tyler Evans# led with five of BSC's 20 shots. BSC out-shot Fontbonne 20-10.

The Panthers travel to Sewanee this weekend for the Kyle Rote, Jr., Invitational to take on University of the Ozarks, Saturday, and Huntingdon, Sunday, both at 2 p.m.
