SEWANEE, Tenn. - With a 7-1 win against Huntingdon College today, the Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team won its second straight Kyle Rote, Jr., Invitational, hosted by Sewanee. Junior Tyler Evans was named Offensive MVP, freshman Cory Gonzalez was named Defensive MVP, and junior Tony Crocker and sophomore Nico Reitmeier were also named to the All-Tournament Team. The Panthers now stand at 3-1-1 on the season.
In the 23rd minute of play, freshman Ingvi Georgsson got the scoring going off an assist from junior Sean Head. Five minutes later, Reitmeier scored on a header from a corner kick by Georgsson. The Panthers maintained possession for much of the remainder of the half, and led 2-0 at the break.
BSC scored four minutes into the second half with a penalty kick by Crocker, and Georgsson scored again in the 55th minute, assisted by junior Michael Alfano, to go up 4-0. Junior Garner Shivers pushed the lead to 5-0 in the 67th minute, assisted by senior Andrew Shelton, and one minute later Crocker scored his second goal of the game on an assist from Evans.
The Hawks ruined the shutout a minute later in the 68th minute, but the Panthers added one more goal in the 87th minute as junior Brice Hunt scored his first career goal, assisted by Shivers, to put BSC up 7-1.
Senior goalkeeper Shachar Hovan started and played 62 minutes to pick up the win before freshman Alex Levinson came in for the remaining 28 minutes. Hovan made two saves, and Levinson made one.
The Panthers out-shot Huntingdon, 20-7, led by Crocker and Georgsson with four shots apiece.
BSC returns to action on Sept. 19, hosting Maryville College at 4 p.m. at BSC Soccer Park.
