Men's Soccer defeats Huntingdon to win third straight Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational
SEWANEE, Tenn.—With a 1-0 win against Huntingdon College today, the Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team won its third straight Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational title. With the win, the Panthers move to 3-1 on the season.
In today's game, the winning goal did not come until the 70th minute of the match. Sophomore Brynjar Arnason and senior Tyler Evans combined for several one-touch passes that ended with Evans playing the ball back across the goal to an onrushing Garner Shivers, who tapped the ball into the empty net. Shivers' game-winner was one of eleven shots on goal for the Panthers. The stingy BSC defense recorded another shutout and allowed no shots on goal.
Evans' assist in today's game and his game-winner against Greensboro on Saturday earned him Tournament Offensive MVP. BSC sophomore goalkeeper Sveinbo Grimsson earned Tournament Defensive MVP with two shutouts for the weekend. Four Panthers received All-Tournament honors: forward Evans, sophomore center back Cory Gonzalez, goalkeeper Grimsson, and senior midfielder Sean Head.
The Panthers travel to St. Louis, Mo., next weekend to take on Washington University and Westminster College.
