Men's Soccer defeats Sewanee to secure SCAC tournament berth

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Senior Garner Shivers had a goal and an assist to help lead the Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Sewanee, Friday evening at BSC Soccer Park.

The Panthers improved to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and secured a spot in next week's conference tournament, which BSC is hosting. The Tigers dropped to 7-7-2 and 2-5-1 in conference play.

BSC got two first half goals to take a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Senior Tony Crocker gave BSC an early 1-0 edge on a sliding volley off a feed from Shivers in the seventh minute.

Shivers would make it 2-0 in BSC's favor when he headed in a cross from freshman Emil Saevarsson in the 33rd minute.

Sewanee cut the lead to 2-1 in the 88th minute when Samuel Edoung-Byo volleyed in a cross from Alec Peter.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sveinbo Grimsson recorded five saves for BSC. Sewanee starting goalkeeper Derek Williams recorded four saves in the first half but allowed the two goals to take the loss, while Conrad Bandoroff started the second half and registered one save.

The Panthers return to action against SCAC foe Centre College for Senior Day on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the last regular season game of the year before hosting the SCAC Championship next weekend, Nov. 4-6.
