Men's Soccer falls to No. 21 Washington University in season opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team opened the 2012 season Friday evening with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to No. 21 Washington University (Mo.) at BSC Soccer Park.

The game was part of the annual Jim 'n Nick's/PUMA Labor Day Classic. In the first game of the day, Sewanee defeated Blackburn College, 3-1.

The Bears scored the lone goal of the game in the 20th minute when Chris Haeberle found the back of the net off an assist from Brian Wright.

Washington out-shot BSC 9-7 overall and 3-2 on-goal, and took 11 corner kicks to BSC's four. The Panthers were also called for seven fouls, three more than the Bears.

Senior BSC goalkeeper Sveinbo Grimsson played all 90 minutes, recording two saves. Washington keeper Jonathan Jebson also had two saves in the game.

Action continues on Sunday as Sewanee and Washington face off at noon and BSC takes on Blackburn at 2:30 p.m.
