BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Eight different Panthers scored goals on Sunday as the Birmingham-Southern men's soccer team shut out Blackburn College, 8-0, in the final game of the 2012 Jim 'n Nick's/Puma Labor Day Classic.
With the win, BSC moves to 1-1 on the season, while Blackburn falls to 0-2.
Junior Cory Gonzalez opened the scoring in the seventh minute of the game with an unassisted goal, and BSC held a 1-0 lead for the next 20 minutes before junior Brooks Busby scored in the 28th minute off an assist from senior Armann Gunnlaugsson. Freshman Haraldur Birgisson put the Panthers up 3-0 in the 34th minute, assisted by senior Emil Saevarsson, and freshman Cody Santos scored in the 40th minute off an assist from Gunnlaugsson to give BSC a 4-0 lead after one half of play.
The Panthers held the 4-0 lead for the first 30 minutes of the second half before finding the net again in the 76th minute on a goal from senior Nathan Haywood assisted by junior Brynjar Arnason. Junior Kyle Sherrin scored the sixth goal of the game less than a minute later off an assist from junior Tobias Winter, and Arnason scored to put the Panthers up 7-0 in the 87th minute, courtesy of another Winter assist.
Tobi Winter scored a goal and
had two assists in Sunday's
game against Blackburn.
With the clock winding down, Winter was able to score once more with seven seconds left in the game off a ball from Birgisson, putting BSC up 8-0 for the shutout victory.
Senior Sveinbo Grimsson started in goal and played 45 minutes, recording two saves. Junior Alex Levinson came in for the second half. For Blackburn, Shane Rogers played all 90 minutes and recorded seven saves.
The Panthers dominated offensively, out-shooting the Beavers 42-3, led by Arnason with six shots. BSC also took nine corner kicks to Blackburn's one.
BSC travels to Fayetteville, N.C., next weekend for the Methodist Fall Classic, where they will face N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday, Sept. 8, and Methodist on Sunday, Sept. 9.
